Our Partnership with INEOS Team GB
Our partnership with INEOS Team GB (previously Land Rover BAR) spans many years and we're immensely proud to be the team’s official UK Marina Partner – a partnership built on our shared values of innovation, pride and experience.
We were pleased to support Land Rover BAR with their 35th America’s Cup Challenge. We worked closely with the team to help set up their base in Bermuda, creating customised pontoons that were expertly designed to give swift access for the team, with the ability to rotate 90° and allow boats to berth in all wind directions, as well as accommodate the crucial support boats.
We also ran an exciting competition with Land Rover for our members, offering a once-in-a-lifetime chance to travel to Bermuda to watch the team in action. Our lucky winner, Sue Bushnell from Ocean Village Marina, was drawn from over 1,000 entries. Read her story here.
This year’s winner of the America’s Cup was Emirates Team New Zealand, who put in a strong and consistent performance. This means the 36th America’s Cup will be contested in the waters off Auckland in 2021, the first time since 2003, and they’ll be racing in foiling 75ft monohulls!
In addition to our exciting oyster restoration project with Blue Marine Foundation, this year also saw Land Rover BAR introduce the UK’s first seabin on the pontoon MDL installed at its base in Portsmouth. The seabin is an automated rubbish collection device to collect floating debris and micro plastics. The team are expecting it to remove half a tonne of debris from the waters around The Camber each year, as well as removing pollutants such as oils and detergents. The seabin forms part of the team’s on-going drive to become the most sustainable sports team in the world, a goal that is fully supported by everyone at MDL. Read more about the seabin here.
With the introduction of a technological division at INEOS Team GB, here at MDL we’re looking forward to more exciting new innovations and are already gearing up to support the team with their 2021 America’s Cup challenge.
